Best Nature-Inspired Outdoor Photo Locations near Cedar Rapids & Iowa City (5 of My Favorites)

Looking for the perfect spot for your photos? Start here.

One of the first questions I get when planning a session is:

“Where should we take photos?”

I always remind my clients that choosing a place that feels like YOU matters more than finding the “perfect” location.

Because “perfect” is different for everyone.

I’d much rather take your photos in a place where you feel comfortable, connected, or somewhere that holds meaning to you, because that shines through in the photos.

With that said, the right setting can absolutely elevate your session and if you don’t have any location ideas in mind don’t worry, that’s what I’m here for!

Here are just a few of my favorite go-to outdoor photo locations around the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Corridor that consistently photograph beautifully while still allowing space for those natural, candid moments.

(There are so many incredible spots in Eastern Iowa beyond these. We’re lucky to have so many options right here in our own backyard!)

1. Wanatee Park — Marion, Iowa

Wanatee Park is one of my favorite locations for sessions because of its space and variety.

With over 1,000 acres of open land, wooded areas, and trails, it gives us a lot to work with while still keeping everything relaxed and unhurried.

There’s also a campground tucked into the park, which can be a really great option if camping is something you love. Reserve a spot and let’s document you in your element! (Think cooking dinner, playing games, roasting s’mores, and laughing around the campfire!)

The park also features a dog area and a children’s playground, which makes it especially great for families.

2. Morgan Creek Park & Arboretum — Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Morgan Creek Park & Arboretum has that wide-open, natural feel that photographs beautifully in every season—from blossoming crabapple trees in the spring, to vibrant flowers in the summer, to golden prairie grasses and changing leaves in the fall.

The Arboretum includes a one-mile crushed limestone rock loop through a variety of trees and shrubs. The property also features prairie grasses and a gorgeous butterfly garden.

The Park side has a playground that has a unique and cool design. Additionally, if you have a fur baby, the Park is dog friendly and also features a separate off-leash area.

And on top of all of this, there’s also a campground!

3. Lake Macbride State Park — North Liberty, Iowa

If you’re drawn to water, Lake Macbride is a wonderful option.

Between the shoreline, wooded trails, and open areas, it creates a really calm, scenic backdrop without feeling overly busy. And it’s absolutely stunning at sunset!

There are more than seven miles of hiking trails and plenty of fishing spots, along with two campgrounds, a beach, playground, and boat rentals—including pontoons, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and pedal boats.

4. Palisades-Kepler State Park — Mount Vernon, Iowa

In my opinion, Palisades-Kepler State Park is really hard to beat.

If you’re wanting something a little more nature-forward, this location is for you! Located along the Cedar River, this park is known for its wooded trails, sandbars, and bluffs, which creates a really rich, textured backdrop.

There are several hiking trails that wind through the park, along with scenic overlooks and historic stone buildings throughout, which adds a layer of character giving you a mix of natural scenery and something a little more architectural without feeling out of place.

5. Indian Creek Nature Center — Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Indian Creek Nature Center is a really beautiful option that features prairie grasses, walking trails, and a mix of wooded spaces. It has a calm, natural feel that photographs really well.

It even features the historic Bertram Bridge (“Blue Bridge”), which was relocated to the Nature Center in 2024 and now serves as a pedestrian bridge.

Additionally, an added bonus for families with young children, there is an outdoor playscape (Hazelnut Hideaway) that uses a mix of wood and stone materials to create a really unique and fun area for kids.

How to Choose the Right Location

If you’re not sure which outdoor location is best, here are a few things to think about:

  • Do you want open fields or more wooded areas?
  • Do you feel drawn to water or land?
  • What kind of environment do you feel most yourself in?
  • Is there a place or routine that has meaning in your everyday life?

You don’t have to figure it out alone. A big part of the process is making sure everything feels aligned with where you are right now, which I talk more about in this post → What It’s Like to Work Together.

We’ll choose a location together based on:

  • Your vision
  • What feels true to you
  • What you want to remember from this season
